Traditional Martial Arts in Bakersfield

Welcome to Tohashi Dojo. My name is Brando Ream, Godan Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei, owner of Tohashi Dojo in Bakersfield, California. A martial art school dedicated to to the study of traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts, Karate Do, Aiki-Jutsu, Kobudo and Iaido. Building self confidence, strong bodies and good character through the study of these traditional arts.

Tohashi translates   "To" Climb,  High Elevation and "Hashi" Bridge. Tohashi is also the first phonetic sound of each of my martial arts teachers last names; Soke Shian Toma, All Okinawa Seidokan Karate Kobudo Renmei. (Ret) Col. Roy Hobbs, Hanshi Preident of Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei Inc. and Masayuki Shimabukuro, Hanshi President of Nippon Kokusai Budo Kai.

My dojo reflects their teaching. Tohashi Dojo, is in honor of my teachers, their hard work and dedication they have made to help others. These three men have played a part in my life, because of my long study of tradtional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts.

Sadly, Shian Toma, Soke  All Okinawa Seidokan Karate Kobudo Tuite Renmei, passed away on May 23 2012 in Okinawa at the age of 82.  Masayuki Shimabukuro, Hanshi  President and Founder Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai, died, September 12 2012 in San Diego, California at the age of 64. Shimabukuro Sensei had a huge impact on me and other dojo's teaching traditional martial arts in Bakersfield.

Sensei Hobbs and the Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei has a wealth of knowledge that few can match. I started a small private dojo at my house and with the approval from Sensei Hobbs, Tohashi Dojo came to be. This fall, I moved the dojo to it's new location. Tohashi Dojo is the only dojo on the West Coast that teaches the full Dentokan syllabus.

Semi-private lessons

While teaching at my home dojo, I had a class of a few students. I liked the small class size and enjoyed the Karate and Aiki Jutsu training atmosphere. After opening in a new location, I decided to keep a small class size. "Quality Instruction", not "Quanity of Students". Class size are limited to 8 students. This gives the instructor more individual time per student while in class. If you want a more private setting, small group training, Tohashi Dojo is the place. Plenty of room. Once classes are filled, it will be closed and a waiting list will be made. Yudansha Kai students may participate in the Aiki Jutsu and Kobudo class. Ask about our Yudansha Kai Class.
